Just an addendum on using a water faucet seal. It disintegrated after a very short period of running. we replaced the entire cable with an oem which came with a new seal... guess what?! It was still leaking. After cleaning up the entire lower engine, getting in all the cracks and crevises, enuff to eat offa, so to speak, and then running the engine, we were able to trace the leak exactly. Turns out, it was leaking at the set screw that holds the speedo housing into the engine. Screw was stripped. A little bit of gasket maker goop on the threads and the leak was gone. Still hasn't reappeared after several hours of touring. We have our hands on a replacement screw from the bike wreckers yard, but it ain't leaking, so we'll just wait on replacing it. Hopefully, it won't get lost before it's needed!
Learned a valuable lesson. Cleanliness makes tracking an oil leak a lot easier. Takes away the guesswork.
